Drum Loops & Backing Tracks

I was wondering if it was possible to use a MIDI Controller to Play/Stop a sound loop, independent of the music keyboard and its assigned instrument. 

For example, if I'm playing a song with SamplerBox using the grand piano instrument, and while I'm playing, I hit a button that triggers a drum loop, which does not interrupt my playing.

This would be a very useful feature.
